DPSS Heightens Awareness of Elder Abuse in Riverside and Throughout California

For every one case of elder abuse that is reported, as many as four go unreported according to Lisa Shiner from DPSS adult services. Reporting all forms of elder abuse is the main focus of the agency’s new campaign, hoping to help stop the neglect and abuse of hundreds of thousands of people across California whose stories are going unheard.

The first step is spreading knowledge, signs, and symptoms of elder abuse and neglect to the California communities. Once people are aware of elder abuse they are more likely to report it to Adult Protective Services.

Reports of such abuse, including emotional, physical, and financial abuse have increased by 16 percent countywide since 2015, caused by both increased awareness and the growing senior population. If you suspect elder abuse or neglect, here are a few things to look for:

Neglect of basic amenities such as food or water
Poor hygiene
Tarnished clothing including bloody, ripped or stained.
Physical marks such as bruises and broken bones
Sudden emotional distress and/or changes
Missing funds from bank accounts
