The Formation of Bed Sores

Bed sores or pressure sores (also referred to medically as “decubitus ulcers”) occur as a result of pressure applied to the body for long periods of time.  Bed sores may also appear as a result of skin exposure to the cold for a prolonged period of time.  One of the most common ways bed sores are formed is a result of a lack of movement for a long period of time while a person is lying on a bed.  When the weight of a person’s body is pushed onto their bone, their bone then presses on that tissue and the portion of skin that covers it.  This tissue is then stuck between the person’s bone structure and the bed, causing the tissue to start to decay due to a lack of blood circulation.  This is one of the most common ways that a person can develop bed sores.

Prevention of Bed Sores

One of the best ways to prevent the formation of bed sores is to make sure that the elderly individual changes the position of their body at least once every two hours.  Depending on that person’s individual caretaking needs, they may need to change position more often than the general every-two-hours recommendation.  The reason for the two-hour recommendation is the general standard of care as it has been found that this is the appropriate amount of time that a person’s skin tissue can tolerate pressure without sustaining any damage.  Other ways to prevent the formation of bed sores include maintaining healthcare needs, such as adequate hygiene, nutrition, and maintaining hydration levels.

Treatment for Bed Sores

If bed sores have developed, the first step in treating this condition is to keep the affected area of the body clean and to remove any necrotic tissue.  Necrotic tissue, or dead skin tissue, can become a breeding ground for infections, so it is important to treat this area properly as soon as possible.  Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for these types of infections.  Additionally, if the wound is very deep, proper treatment may include surgical removal or debridement of the necrotic tissue.  In some circumstances, amputation may even be required.
