Using a teddy bear or baby therapy doll can be an incredibly effective way to decrease a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia’s stress and anxiety. It’s meant to help put structure back into the lives of those affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s. It can even help in initiating speech in those with Alzheimer’s that haven’t been talking,
Unfortunately two women, Shauna Higgin and Victoria Johnson, were detained recently for the ill treatment of dementia residents by carrying out distaste-less acts on the therapy dolls. The nursing home care-takers would ‘harm’ the dolls in front of the residents by doing things such as trying to yank the doll from an elderly woman, throwing the doll on the floor and screaming ‘die baby die’, hanging the doll by its’ neck, putting the doll in a tumble dryer, a cooking pot, and even being dragged along a corridor.
Since then the 29 room nursing home was placed in special measures by the CQC (Care Quality Commission) to send a message and try to prevent this from happening in the future.
