Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) A main Cause of Accidental Death in the United States

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the main cause of accidental death in the United States and all highly developed countries, accounting for around 40% of all accidental mortality.

Often, such injuries also cause permanent invalidity. Road traffic accidents are the most common cause by far. Around 20-30% of patients with severe TBI have intracranial bleeding or impression fractures that necessitate neurosurgical intervention. More than 70% of patients with traumatic brain injuries can be treated conservatively, which why intensive care plays a key role in TBI treatment.

To understand TBI treatment it is important to know that primary and secondary brain damage can be differentiated. During the development of a delayed secondary injury the post-traumatic cerebral under-perfusion of the tissue (ischaemia) plays a decisive role. The cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), defined as mean arterial pressure (MAP) minus intracranial pressure (ICP), together with cerebral vascular resistance are the physiological variables that control cerebral blood flow (CBF) and metabolic supply. Therefore, there is a close link between CPP and ischaemia.

There are currently very different views about the level of the necessary cerebral perfusion pressure. The guidelines from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) recommend a CPP targeted treatment as ischaemia and hypoxia (lack of adequate oxygen supply) of the brain are considered to be main factors of post-traumatic brain swelling.

Erb’s Palsy Birth Injury Settlement

Erb’s Palsy Birth Injury Settlement: A 9-year-old United Kingdom girl who suffered a debilitating birth  injury will receive a six-figure settlement to help secure her future.

According to a story in the U.K.-based Coventry Telegraph Demi Newell suffered serious nerve  damage when she was born in 2003. This left her with a severely disabled arm  that makes some routine tasks impossible.

Demi’s family took legal action against the U.K.’s National Health System  trust that runs the hospital where she was born. It claimed that improper  medical care caused the girl’s injury. Demi was a large infant whose shoulders  became stuck in the birth canal during delivery.

The family’s birth  injury attorneys claim that the medical team who delivered her used “excessive traction” to Demi’s head, which caused damage to the nerves connected  to her shoulder, arm and hand. This resulted in a permanent condition known as “Erb’s Palsy.”

Recently, a high court judge approved a birth injury settlement for an  undisclosed six-figure sum. The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, which did not  admit liability in the matter, agreed to the settlement one month before the  case was due to go to trial.

“Demi will undoubtedly face difficulties in years to come, particularly in  employment, and these funds will go a considerable way to securing her future,” said the family’s attorney.

While most infants who suffer from Erb’s Palsy will eventually recover  feeling and movement in the affected arm, some like Demi Newell will suffer  lifelong effects from their injuries. Early intervention that includes  physiotherapy can greatly increase the chances that the child will regain  feeling and movement.

Erb’s palsy is sometimes caused by improper medical care or negligence. Do  you or a loved one have a child who was born with a birth injury such as Erb’s  palsy? Is the condition attributable to medical error?

California Court Records Verdicts For Wrongful Death and Elder Abuse

A Sacramento Superior Court jury has returned verdicts of wrongful death and elder abuse against the nation’s largest assisted living company.

The Sacramento Bee reports  the trial now enters the punitive-damages phase for Emeritus Corp, a Seattle-based company with annual revenue of $1 billion.

A suit was filed on behalf of Joan Boice, an 82-year-old resident with Alzheimer’s disease who died shortly after leaving an Emeritus facility in Auburn five years ago. When she left, the newspaper says, Boice had at least four major bedsores that were listed as significant factors in her cause of death.

Plaintiffs attorneys argued that understaffing and lack of training represented a strategy on Emeritus’ part to cut costs.

An Emeritus spokesperson says the company stands behind the quality of care it provides.
