1.4 Million Traumatic Brain Injuries Occur In the United States Each Year

In an effort to bring greater attention to brain injuries, Rep. Dick Stevenson (R-Mercer/Butler) has secured passage of a House resolution to designate March 2013 as Brain Injury Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

“In the past few years, there has been greater attention and research directed toward brain injuries, including long-term effects, diagnosis and prevention,” Stevenson said. “However, we still need to keep that momentum strong and do whatever we can to further increase awareness and to support and assist residents suffering from brain injuries.”

Brain injury is the leading cause of disability and death from birth to age 40.

House Resolution 66, which received a unanimous vote in the House on Monday, cites information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that at least 1.4 million traumatic brain injuries occur in the United States each year. Of this estimate, 50,000 cases of injury result in death, 235,000 require hospitalization, and 1.1 million seek emergency room treatment. There are countless more patients who receive other medical care, or no care, or miss the symptoms until it is too late.

In addition to injuries to the brain from trauma, just as much attention is focused on acquired brain injury, which is any brain injury that occurs after birth. Generally speaking, ABIs are thought of according to their cause as either traumatic or non-traumatic. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs when the brain is injured by any traumatic action, such as an auto accident, fall, striking by or against any object, or an assault. Non-traumatic brain injuries often occur from events such as cerebral vascular accidents, lack of oxygen, ingestion of toxic substances, brain tumors, etc.

“In addition to learning the signs and symptoms of any type of brain injury, we should use this opportunity to find out more about prevention and education,” Stevenson said. “The brain is one of the most complex organs of the body, and as such, brain injuries can often be underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, and that’s why critical attention must be directed toward brain injuries.”

The resolution also recognizes the leading research centers in Pennsylvania that have devoted countless time and resources to brain injury science, along with the two organizations with a strong focus on brain injury — the Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Association of Rehabilitation Facilities.

Wrongful Death Suit filed In Las Vegas Over Death of 7-year Old Boy

The biological father of a 7-year-old boy who died from apparent abuse by his mom and her husband is suing Clark County, among others, for negligence and wrongful death.

Metro police on Thursday arrested a Las Vegas mother and stepfather for the beating and eventual death of a 7-year-old boy.

Roderick Arrington Jr., 7, was pronounced dead on Nov. 30 at a hospital. He had been admitted in critical condition and was unresponsive. Metro police believe he took a severe beating at the hands of Markiece Palmer, 34, and Dina Palmer, 27.

The two are charged with child abuse, neglect and murder.

“The first thing you think of is what could he have done to deserve that kind of punishment?” said Angel Gray, a neighbor in the area of Desert Inn Road and Decatur Boulevard.

Police said the child came to live with the Las Vegas couple just a few months ago, after residing with his father in Bloomington, IL.

Police believe the child was subjected to repeated instances of abuse.

“Nice, normal people,” Gray said. “My daughter and their son, RJ, played together. He’d come to our house, ask us for rides to school.”

Markiece Palmer told police that on Wednesday, Nov. 28, he took off his belt, tied it in a loop and struck Roderick Arrington Jr. before shaking him. Markiece further told police that the child then ran down a flight of stairs, slipped and hit his head on a table before falling backwards on the floor.

Dina Palmer also admitted to striking her child with the same belt.

“I’m trained to know when a child is being abused, but (there were) no signs,” said Gray, who is a preschool teacher. “He was very talkative, friendly, well-mannered.”

Police discovered marks on the child and Dina Palmer admitted to having given him “whoopins.”

Some of the reasons for those “whoopins” included failure to complete homework and failure to read Bible passages.

Markiece and Dina Palmer are currently in Clark County Detention Center.

According to a letter sent to parent on Monday, Roderick Arrington Jr. was a second grade student at Owen Round Elementary School.

Elder’s Skin Eaten By Bed Sores

A 78 year old elder women staying in a California skilled nursing facility’s skin was eaten by bed sores says.

Bed sores also known as Decubius Ulcer and Pressure Sores are injuries caused to a person’s skin and underlying tissue that develop when a person experiences prolonged pressure on a particular area of their body. In this case, bed sores resulted when the patient was not turned properly throughout the day. patient’s need to be routinely turned at least once every two hours and in many instances more often depending on the needs of the patient.

A lawsuit was filed claiming that the facility routinely failed to “properly prevent, monitor and treat the bed sores, decubitus ulcers and pressure sores, and these injuries were a cause of the death.  There were also allegations that the elder’s Bed Sores, Decubitus Ulcers and Pressure Sores became infected with  E. Coli and became Septic also contributing to the death.
