Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect is epidemic in the State of California and all around the United States

Today more than ever the Nursing Home Industry in the State of California and all around the United States is under strict scrutiny concerning the care and / or lack of care that elders and dependant adults are receiving in these facilities says California Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer Steven Peck.

Many of the issues which seem to occur routinely in these facilities concern Bed Sores, also known as Decubitus Ulcers, Dehydration, Malnutrition, and Medication errors.

Bed Sores are frequently caused by the failure of the Nursing Assistants to trun the elder patients constantly in order to avoid constant  pressure of their skin, causing red marks that eventually turn into Bed sores, Pressure Sores and Decubitus Ulcers.

Dehydration is caused by the failure of the elders to have or get sufficient liquids into their systems.  Many times that liquids and / or water provided to the residents are not monitored for input and output.  Other times the facilities fail to adequately chart the amount of liquids that a particular resident is receiving.  either way many resident in skilled and Long Term Care Facilities are not receiving adequate hydration, cuasing renal failure, Sepsis and other times Death.

Malnutrition is caused by the failure of a residne to receive adequate nutrition.  Elders and Dependant Adults must be watched very carefully to be assured they are receving the nutrition that has been ordered ny their Physician.  Many times the food is put in front to the resident, never eaten and never documented as eaten.  Malnutrition can casuse many problems including skin breakdown, infection, bed sores and can also lead to Death.

Medication Errors are a major problem in long term care facilities.  Patients are often given the wrong medication, to high or too low of a dose of medication, and / or overmedicated,so that the facility can warehouse their residents and not have to deal with what they call “troublesome” resdients.  medication issues can lead to very serious side effects and complications and are a major cause of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect.

Septic Shock Is A Complication of Infection More Often Occuring In Elderly Individuals

Septic shock is what happens as a complication of an infection where toxins can initiate a full-body inflammatory response. It often occurs in people who are elderly or have a weakened immune system.

It is thought that the inflammation resulting from sepsis causes tiny blood clots to form, which can block oxygen and nutrients from reaching vital organs. As a result, the organs fail, causing a profound septic shock. This may cause a drop in blood pressure and may result in death. In fact, septic shock is the most common cause of death in intensive care units in the United States.

Doctors have identified three stages of sepsis:

  • Sepsis, when an infection reaches the bloodstream and causes inflammation throughout the body.
  • Severe sepsis, which occurs when infection disrupts blood flow to the brain or kidneys, leading to organ failure. Blood clots cause gangrene (tissue death) in the arms, legs, fingers, and toes.
  • Septic shock, when blood pressure drops significantly. This can lead to respiratory, heart, or organ failure and death.

Bed Sores, Decubitus Ulcers and Pressure Sores Will Develop Rapidly In People Who Are Unable To Change Positions

Bedsores — also called pressure sores or pressure ulcers — are injuries to skin and underlying tissues that result from prolonged pressure on the skin. Bedsores most often develop on skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as the heel, ankles, hips or buttocks.

People most at risk of bedsores are those with a medical condition that limits their ability to change positions, requires them to use a wheelchair or confines them to a bed for prolonged periods.

Bedsores can develop quickly and are often difficult to treat. Several care strategies can help prevent some bedsores and promote healing.

Pressure sores are caused by pressure against the skin that inhibits an adequate supply of blood to skin and underlying tissues. Other factors related to limited mobility can make the skin vulnerable to damage and contribute to the development of pressure sores. There are three primary contributing factors:

Sustained Pressure:

When your skin and the underlying tissues are trapped between bone and a surface such as a wheelchair or bed, the pressure may be greater than the pressure of the blood flowing in the tiny vessels (capillaries) that deliver oxygen and other nutrients to tissues. Deprived of these essential nutrients, cells of the skin and other tissues are damaged and may eventually die. This kind of pressure tends to happen in areas that aren’t well padded with muscle or fat and that lie just over a bone, such as your spine, tailbone (coccyx), shoulder blades, hips, heels and elbows.

Friction:

Friction is the resistance to motion. When a person changes position or is handled by care providers, friction may occur when the skin is dragged across a surface. The resistance to motion may be even greater if the skin is moist. Friction between skin and another surface may make fragile skin more vulnerable to injury.

Shear:

Shear occurs when two surfaces move in the opposite direction. For example, when a hospital bed is elevated at the head, a person can slide down in bed. As the tailbone moves down, the skin over the bone may stay in place — essentially pulling in the opposite direction. This motion may damage tissue and blood vessels, making the site more vulnerable to damage from sustained pressure
