Understaffed Nursing Homes in Southern California

A recently filed lawsuit has alleged purposeful understaffing of nursing homes in the southern California area. The lawsuit joined 14 other class action cases pending against nursing homes in California, most of which are located in southern California. These lawsuits allege not only that these nursing home facilities are chronically understaffed, but that this is done purposefully in order to increase profits for the facilities. At this time, the outcome of the pending lawsuits has not been determined.

A Positive Change in California Law

In July of 2018, a new law in the state of California went into effect. The new law requires a minimum ratio of 3.5 nursing hours per patient day in a skilled nursing facility, which is an increase from the previous minimum of 3.2 hours. The term hours per patient day means the number of direct nursing care hours that are required to care for the facility’s patients. This new law may help to decrease the prevalence of elder abuse, but the impact has yet to be determined.

The bandage is designed to detect the earliest stages of the formation of bed sores even before they can be deterred by the human eye.
