Elder abuse can come in many forms, including physical abuse and neglect. Many things can constitute physical abuse or neglect, including an elderly nursing home or assisted living resident being choked or choking due to failure to adhere to medical precautions. Choking in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities

For elderly residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, there are many dangers they may face. One of these dangers is choking. While it may sound like it should be an uncommon occurrence, elderly residents do suffer from choking abuse and neglect. This can occur through both physical abuse and also through neglect when an elderly person has special medication and food restrictions that are not followed.

Elderly residents may become injured or even die because a nursing home staff member is unaware of their special medical needs. One example of this is delivering medications that cause mouth and throat dryness, which could result in choking if certain precautions are not taken. Additionally, some elderly adults have medical conditions involving neurological issues that can prevent normal swallowing functions. If special care is not given to these residents, serious consequences can occur. For injuries that result from these kinds of issues, negligence on behalf of the nursing home or assisted living facility is often a major cause.

Keya Morgan, the one-time partner, and business manager of comic book legend Stan Lee has recently been charged with multiple counts of elder abuse. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Elder Abuse Charges

Currently, Keya Morgan is facing three felony counts of embezzlement, theft, forgery, or fraud against an elderly person, along with one misdemeanor count of elder abuse. He has also been charged with another felony count, false imprisonment of an elder adult. These charges were filed in Los Angeles County. Keya Morgan was also charged last year with falsely reporting a crime and falsely reporting an emergency, and also a probation violation.

According to papers filed with the court, Adult Protective Services officials and law enforcement went to Stan Lee’s home in May of 2018 for a welfare check. While Lee was being interviewed, Morgan allegedly arrived at the home, and the security guards declined to let him in. Morgan then reportedly made a false 911 call, claiming that three unidentified burglary suspects were in his friend’s home and had locked everybody out of the house. Later on that night, Morgan dialed 911 again and accused a security guard at Lee’s home of assaulting them with a deadly weapon, according to documents filed in court.

The recent documents filed by Lee’s attorneys allege that Morgan isolated Lee from his family and friends. It was also alleged that Morgan moved Lee out of his home and into a condominium and exerted undue influence over him.

This is an ongoing matter that has not yet been resolved. There will likely be more information released as the case progresses.

Gangrene

When bodily tissue dies, gangrene is a condition that can develop. Gangrene is caused by a loss of blood supply that results from an underlying injury, illness, or infection. The most common areas of the body for gangrene to develop are fingers, toes, and other outer limbs. However, it is important to note that gangrene also has the ability to develop inside the body. Gangrene that occurs inside the body may cause damage to the organs and muscles.

Osteomyelitis Secondary to Stage IV Decubitus Ulcer

A decubitus ulcer is the medical term for bed sores or pressure ulcers. When a decubitus ulcer is left untreated, serious infections may develop. One of these infections is called osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis is a bone infection that can either be acute or chronic, and it is caused by bacteria. This disorder commonly occurs as a result of an infection that developed in one area of the body. The infection in that one area is then transported through the bloodstream and ends up settling in a bone in a distant location from the originally affected body part. If these ulcers are left untreated, they will eventually extend to the bone. Osteomyelitis is thought to occur in nearly one-third of stage four pressure ulcers.
