The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office has been working to reduce elder abuse by aggressively prosecuting instances of elder abuse in the criminal law system. The office has created a special unit to handle these crimes, called the Elder Abuse Unit, which handles all of the felony cases involving elder and dependent adult abuse and neglect cases. This unit is part of the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office Domestic Violence Unit. The county helps victims by matching them with Victim advocates to help them deal with the process.
The Elder Death Review Team
The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office has also partnered with the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services and started The Elder Death Review Team, which is the first of its kind. The purpose of the review team is to take a closer look at elder and dependent adult cases that resulted in deaths to see what could have been improved upon.
The team works to identify strategies, along with procedures and policies that may help prevent elder abuse and neglect in the future. An effort is also made to review communications between different organizations to determine if there are improvements that can be made for future cases. The EDRT meets six times a year to review cases.
Reporting Elder Abuse or Neglect
If you are concerned that an elderly loved one may be experiencing abuse or neglect, you can report it to your local law enforcement agency, as well as Adult Protective Services. An investigation into the matter will then be made.
