California has one of the highest rates of elder abuse in the United States. As we continue our fight against elder abuse, informing the public on the signs and symptoms has become ever important.

In the latest case, an Oceanside elderly woman was pushed out of a doorway down a set of 3 steps by her caregiver. Luckily there was surveillance video of the altercation. The caregiver was brought in and charged with murder / elder abuse of Margaret Wood, a 94 year old woman from Oceanside, California.

Margaret had passed away 11 weeks after the incident from the injuries she received (cracked skull and broken nose). Before she passed she was able to record her testimony to use in the trial against the perpetrator.

The caregiver of whom assaulted Margaret was identified as William Sutton. William had been taking care of her for two years before the incident.

Sutton may face up to a life sentence in prison for this crime.

Elder abuse is a rising problem all over our country, including Riverside County, California. Recently, the Temecula Police Department investigated suspected financial elder abuse allegedly committed by two individuals residing in Moreno Valley and San Bernardino.

Riverside County Incidents of Elder Abuse

The Temecula Police Department spent nine months investigating eleven different incidents of suspected elder abuse in the form of theft and fraudulent transactions from multiple elderly residents living at a retirement community in Temecula. Once the investigation was complete, two perpetrators were arrested for several different crimes, including elder abuse, identity theft, forgery, burglary, and embezzlement. One of the perpetrators had been employed as a leasing agent at the Temecula retirement home.

Now, the Food and Drug Administration requires manufacturers to place a black box warning on the packaging of these drugs to recommend that they not be used for treatment for dementia patients.
