Elder abuse is becoming a serious problem everywhere, all over the country. A recent case of elder abuse occurred earlier this year in San Bernardino County, California.
Elder Abuse – Unsafe Living Conditions
Two men were arrested earlier in 2018 after a 65-year-old woman was found confined to a chair. The area around the woman was covered in dog feces and she was surrounded by trash. Sheriff’s investigators determined that she had been there for at least five days.
When she was discovered, the elder abuse victim was barely able to speak, according to a release issued by the San Bernardino County sheriff’s Rancho Cucamonga Station. The victim was also unable to stand on her own. The victim was found after someone had contacted authorities asking for a wellness check.
The Perpetrators of Elder Abuse
Brandon Clay Carls, age twenty-four and Sebastian Trujillo, age twenty-seven, were arrested on suspicion of elder abuse in connection with this crime. They both also had outstanding arrest warrants for unrelated reasons. After an investigation, the Rancho Cucamonga Station deputies found out that the victim had not been moved in almost five days, and that Carls, her caretaker, had refused to take care of her. Trujillo also lived in the home and did not help the elderly woman.
Caretakers as Perpetrators of Elder Abuse
The most common perpetrators of elder abuse tend to be those in caretaking roles. Though this case is an extreme example of elder abuse, it can also occur as other forms of neglect, such as failure to provide medication, failure to provide proper nutrition, and allowing unsanitary living conditions.
