Decubitus Ulcer, Pressure Sores, Bed Sores Will Cause Severe Medical Complications if Not Dealt With Timely

Stage  IV Decubitus Ulcers (also known as Pressure Sores, or Bed sores) involve tissue necrosis and often require debridement and surgical repair or reconstruction with skin or muscle flaps. Most patients are either elderly or physically impaired (spinal cord injury, paralyzed, bedridden, etc…), which impedes self care. Complication rates after decubitus ulcer repair surgeries are relatively high and hospital stays tend to be very long compared with other types of surgery, in part because of the underlying conditions of the patients. This represents an enormous burden on patients, caregivers and society.

Decubitus Ulcers, Pressure Sores, or Bed Sores, can and will cause severe medical complications if not dealt with timely.  Many times elders / dependent adults are found lying in their own feces, which feces contaminates the Decubitus Ulcer causing E-Coli infections.  if these infections are not caught in their early stage, the infection will get into the elder / dependent adults bloodstream causing the blood to become Septic.

Osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone, can also arise if the Stage IV Decubitus Ulcer, Pressure Sore, Bed Sore are not medically taken care of, causing serious and possible debilitating issues.

Caretakers Detained for Dementia Doll Abuse

elder abuse and neglect news in California

Using a teddy bear or baby therapy doll can be an incredibly effective way to decrease a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia’s stress and anxiety.  It’s meant to help put structure back into the lives of those affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s. It can even help in initiating speech in those with Alzheimer’s that haven’t been talking,

Unfortunately two women, Shauna Higgin and Victoria Johnson, were detained recently for the ill treatment of dementia residents by carrying out distaste-less acts on the therapy dolls. The nursing home care-takers would ‘harm’ the dolls in front of the residents by doing things such as trying to yank the doll from an elderly woman, throwing the doll on the floor and screaming ‘die baby die’, hanging the doll by its’ neck, putting the doll in a tumble dryer, a cooking pot, and even being dragged along a corridor.

Since then the 29 room nursing home was placed in special measures by the CQC (Care Quality Commission) to send a message and try to prevent this from happening in the future.
