Common Causes of Truck Accidents

Texting and Driving

There are an estimated 41,000 – 45,000 traffic deaths that occur every year in the United States alone as a result of trucking accidents. With commercial trucks making up more than 12.5% of all vehicles on the road, it is incredibly important to know the various causes of truck accidents to stay safe while driving.

Causes of Truck Accidents

More than 75% of truck accidents are caused by passenger vehicles such as motorcycles and cars. Here are a few common causes of truck accidents caused by both truckers and passenger vehicles:

  • Neglect – Around 90% of truck accidents are caused by human error such as inexperienced drivers, distractions, violation of traffic laws, speeding, driving fatigued, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Failure of Equipment or Parts – There are rules and regulations that the federal government has put in place, however some trucking companies and drivers fail to follow the rules.
  • Improper Loading – There can be disastrous consequences if a truckload is set up improperly, not secured well enough, under-loading or over-loading of the truck, or hazardous materials aren’t properly stored.
