LACK OF HYGIENE THE CAUSE OF ECOLI INFECTIONS IN NURSING HOMES AND LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES

ECOLI infections occurring in health care settings are becoming very prevalent in Nursing Homes and Long Term Care Facilities. If a resident lives in a nursing home where hygiene, cleanliness and appropriate medical care are lacking, that resident may be subject to a potentially life threatening ECOLI infection. ECOLI infections occur in a healthcare settings such as nursing homes, long term care facilities and hospitals due to lack of hygiene.  Elders with infected bedsores incur ECOLI infections because of lack of attention. These infections lead to Sepsis, (infection of the blood), which may prove to be fatal.

Hospital Patients Experience Abuse at Recommended Nursing Homes

Many elderly hospital patients may choose a nursing home based on the hospital’s advice if they felt like they were cared for well during their stay. Unfortunately just because a nursing home is affiliated with the hospital, or even shares a similar name, doesn’t mean that it’s a quality long term care facility.

In the case of 88 year old Elizabeth Fee the nursing home was a long shot from the care she had received at California Pacific Medical Center.  After undergoing hip surgery at California Pacific, the hospital staff encouraged Elizabeth to stay at a ‘Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Unit’ that they were affiliated with. Little did she know that nursing home had a rating of one star by Medicare; the lowest possible rating available.

Unfortunately this choice cost Elizabeth her life in 2012. This comes at a time where nursing home abuse and neglect is running rampant in California and throughout the United States. The choice of the right nursing home is so critical in fact, that a whopping 39% of nursing home facilities have been cited by inspectors just in the past 3 years for abuse or neglect.
